this is it, ladies and gentlemen — what we’ve been building up to all year. this month, the legendary santa cruz indie slam will find out who will represent the city of santa cruz at the national poetry slam.

FEATURE
Sierra DeMulder grew up in a tiny town in upstate New York. She first encountered slam poetry at 14 when she watched her father compete (a morbidly embarrassing experience for her). Sierra earned “Best Female Poet” …at the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational in 2009. Less than two months later, she was awarded a coveted publishing deal from Write Bloody Publishing, which lead to her first full-length book, “The Bones Below.” She was a member of the St. Paul Slam Team, which won the 2009 National Poetry Slam, ranked as 9th in the world at the 2009 Individual World Poetry Slam, and a finalist at the 2009 Women of the World Individual Poetry Slam. Outside of her competitions, Sierra coached the Macalaster College team at the 2010 CUPSI where they placed third in the nation. She also launched her own teaching initiative, in which she conducts weekly poetry classes geared towards aspiring poets of all ages in the Twin Cities community.

FEATURE
Ken Arkind is a four time member of the Denver Slam Team, including the 2006 National Championship Team, 2005 Denver City Champion, project coordinator for The Denver Minor Disturbance Youth Slam, and part of The Dynamic Duo. In reality though, he’s really just a t-shirt and blue jeans kinda guy, who likes puppies and the song “Piano Man” by Billy Joel.

MARCH SLAM – 3/26/11

march, march, march. where do we begin about march? march madness, march hares, march of the penguins. will any of these be at this month’s show? you’ll have to come to find out.

FEATURE
this show, the legendary collective is proud to bring you the double feature of storm and terisa.

…At the age of 23, Terisa Tinei Siagatonu has already established herself as a poet, spoken word artist, and arts educator. Born and rooted in the Bay Area, her emergence into the spoken word world as a queer Samoan womyn and activist has granted her the opportunities to perform on stages ranging from San Francisco’s historical Herbst Theatre to the Womyn’s Stage at the 2010 Oakland PRIDE Festival, and at events such as Youth Speaks’ 13th Annual Life is Living Festival, San Jose’s Polynesian Heritage Festival, and UC Berkeley’s 3rd Annual Queer and Asian Conference. She was also a member of both the 2010 and 2011 UC Santa Cruz team, winning second place in 2010.

Storm Thomas has proven himself a vital part of not only Santa Cruz’s arts community, but of spoken word as a whole. He, too, was a member of both UC Santa Cruz’s 2010 and 2011 teams, performing on final stage and winning second place, and is currently a member of UCSC’s Rainbow Theater Group. Storm is also an active community organizer, working both in Santa Cruz and Los Angeles

FEBRUARY SLAM – 2/26/11

the legendary collective feels it’s crass and unnecessary to make mention of valentine’s day in any event taking place in the month of february. unfortunately, we just did that. oops. please forgive us, or, alternately, come to this month’s exciting show and castigate us in person.

FEATURE
our feature this week is the rarely objectionable abe becker. abe has spoken poems all over the country in the last three or four years. before… that he communicated mostly in flatulence and deep-breath, and sometimes both at once. he likes writing on trains, not watching porn, homeless people and cats. that’s it. he places most acquaintances in one of those categories and tries to inspire everybody else to write on trains, watch less porn, get more homeless and be a cat. it’s some revolutionary shit, yup. he’s led workshops and performed at colleges, high schools, elementary schools, libraries, retreat centers, shelters, bars, theaters, and your friend’s dreams through that rough patch you grew by. moments of renewal, friendships, and viewshifts he’s had simply by speaking poems have kept him going. he’s hella grateful for the opportunity.

We at the Legendary Collective apologize for the delay in the transmission of your Indie Slam news. The website is functional and updated once more, as is the Twitter.

Now, to more pressing business.

There is little glory to the end of January: no holidays, no vacation, and nothing to look forward to until the tomfoolery of spring break. Thankfully, we at the legendary indie slam are a dazzling star in a sea of darkness.

FEATURE
Our feature this week is the exhaustingly superlative Jesse Quick-Rincon. Jesse is proving to be a rising star in the Santa Cruz scene — he competed in not one, but two nationally ranked teams in 2010…. He was a member of Team UC Santa Cruz, which took second place at the College Union Poetry Slam Invitationals (CUPSI), and Team Santa Cruz at the National Poetry Slam, which won third place in group piece finals. He enjoys poetry, fine wine, the Expressionist movement, and buying pizza every Wednesday (because of the weekly discount).

Jason Bayani was the Grand Slam Champion of Berkeley and San Francisco in 2003 and has an MFA from St. Mary’s College. 15 time 3rd place finisher in several track meets. Spoke at the Democratic National Convention in 2008 from my living room to the TV with the volume off. The crowd loved it. Three time nominee for Jason Bayani’s “Best Dude Ever” award. 2nd most nominated person — God. Achieved a 10th degree black belt in Brazilian Joo Jitzu (not to be confused with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) under the tutelage of some guy who calls himself Chad Gracie (I do have a suspicion that he might not be an actual Gracie). Won the award for “Best Actor” by my mom when she came to see me in a 4th grade play. His works can be featured in the Write Bloody publication, Learn then Burn.

So come on out! We’d love to have you! [Really truly. (Or at least *I* would.)]

Woodstock’s Fundraiser and Open Mic this Tuesday 5/25

Help send the Santa Cruz slam team to Nationals! Come to Woodstock’s Pizza on Tuesday, May 25th and we’ll get a portion of the proceeds from the night to send the team members to St. Paul, MN.

Even better? An open mic, featuring the team, will be held at Woodstock’s during the fundraiser! So come out for pizza and poetry!

-This is for eat-in and take-out only, no delivery.

After our amazing Finals event, we’re back! Doing poems mostly just ’cause we like them! (For you competitive folks out there, this is our first slam of the Indi Season!) Come listen and do poems with us! Remember, this is an Indi format, so you need to bring a

And, of course, no props, costumes, or musical instruments.

We have an especially awesome feature: Rudy Francisco! Among other badassery, Rudy took 4th place at last year’s IWPS and is both San Diego and San Francisco Grand Slam Champ!!
